SPA is working to create a large ‘metapopulation’ by combining smaller populations held by private landowners, conservation breeding centers, and zoos. This large metapopulation is what will ultimately serve as a resource for potential reintroduction projects, and an insurance population against extinction. SPA is working to include international populations in this metapopulation. Currently herds in the United States, Canada, and Australia comprise the overall SPA metapopulation. The SPA metapopulation is being utilized to increase funding for conservation, participate in scientific research, improve animal management techniques, and improve public awareness of the plight of ungulates in their native range.
